ALL’ISOLA D’ELBA
(1986)

Agosto 1986: dopo tre anni, possiamo trascorrere le nostre agognate vacanze.
La meta è l’Isola d’Elba, nell’Arcipelago Toscano. Isola dalle varie testimonianze

storiche (Medici), Napoleone.

Arriviamo a Portoferraio, finalmente:

Isola d’Elba: piccola isola bella, interessante e familiare.

ON THE ISLAND OF ELBA
(1986)

August 1986: after three years, we can spend our longed-for holidays.
The destination is the Island of Elba, in the Tuscan Archipelago. Island with various historical testimonies

(Medici), Napoleon. – The journey includes stops for us and for the cat.
In Piombino, the operation to get on the ferry to Portoferraio is done:

the car is loaded in the reserved space and, now, we have about an hour of crossing.
The cat is in her carrier on our coffee table. We keep her pampered

but she cries because she’s tossed about anyway. We finally arrive in Portoferraio:
our car takes us to the small and characteristic Capoliveri, a fine town

engraved in the conformation of the not very large island. Our two-bedrooms apartment
it’s nice, with a long corner balcony with terraecotta: very elegant material.

From this balcony, we see the garden below and a single suffering plant
due to the heat and on which the cat will sharpen her claws. Spacious terrace

with the table-umbrella on which we will eat outdoors and where we will do
barbecue. The owners of the structure have the butcher shop where we will buy

meat. Indeed, Signora Ercide leaves us steaks on the kitchen table,
while we are on the beach and the cat sleeps peacefully, the naughty one.

On the side of the road, the cat inspects, but does not move away from us. Indeed, if it happens,
she jumped two meters onto the terrace without ever being bruised or injured.

Beaches: Mrs. Ercide suggests that of Monte Calamita, but we will opt
for another because we will see it rather narrow, wild, without services. We will notice

its dark sand mixed with pebbles, lapped by the south-eastern current.
The mines of Monte Calamita are rich in iron, once a precious mineral.

Morcone beach: it is located a short distance from Capoliveri and is at the bottom of a staircase
of the promontory (this is a bit complicated). It looks like a legendary cove

with clear water and bewitching sunsets. We choose the Innamorata Beach,
close to the beach of Monte Calamita: it measures 280 meters by 30. It is formed

by sand and pebbles and its place is rich in marine fauna. From here, you can see the Island
of Montecristo, Capo Stella, Monte Capanne. From this beach it slips

Maria, in love with Lorenzo, to save him from Barbarossa’s pirates, but disappears
in the waves: only her shawl will reappear on the Ciarpa rock. – It is advisable to visit

the Napoleonic places: the Emperor of the French has been expelled, banished.
On this island, he has two villas: “Villa San Martino” and “Villa dei Mulini”. The fierce

character, exile, remains here for only ten months. The villa is called
dei Mulini because, before his arrival, the structure had already been created.

Villa di San Martino: located on the outskirts of Portoferraio, it was built
by Napoleon, expanding an existing small rustic house. She’s enriched

from the Napoleonic Museum which Prince Demidoff built a few years later.
It is accessed through a road with stalls where mineral stones have been found

and bought. – However, it is important to remember that the Medici Fortresses are
a majestic complex, whose charm can be seen from the ferry: they recognize each other

the port and the historic center of Portoferraio in the blink of an eye. Build up
to protect the Principality of Piombino of which the Island of Elba is a part.

Trip to Portoferraio where many boats are “parked”: this town
it saw the birth of Giuseppe Pietri, a valid musical operetta player close to us.

Mrs. Ercide tells us that we can go as far as Enfola, the smallest one
spit of land that joins the tiny islet. Ride up to the beautiful

estate of a painter who exhibits his works with painted ceramics in the garden.
On the street, shops and stalls with characteristic local items: she is convinced

our choice at the little restaurant-pizzeria in a corner of the square:
good Tuscan cuisine that my husband is happy to offer to me, his “girlfriend”.

Various shops: in one, we buy a mother-of-pearl “shell” with a spiral shape
so my husband, as an object to support, will create an additional support.

The owner gives me an onyx ring which, unfortunately, breaks
against the coffee table at home due to my lack of foresight.

Elba Island: a small, beautiful, interesting and familiar island. We’ll come back to you
it is a promise that we will, without a doubt and without hesitation, keep.

è in Marocco.

Tahar Ben Jelloun nasce a Fès l’1 dicembre 1944: è uno scrittore, poeta e saggista

Là, inizia a scrivere

Scriverà esclusivamente in francese, collaborando

MOROCCO
(August 1982)

About a month after the “Mundialito” and the Italian victory, our vacation
is in Morocco. Trivalent vaccination and preparations to spend enough

good two weeks. The trip, coincidentally, is with the famous gambler
Albertosi of Milan and sons. Stop in Barcelona for which we spend a few hours

on the Milan-Malpensa/Tangier-Ibn Battouta section. Such
airport is located 12 km south of Tangier itself, along the national road.

Ibn Battouta (1304-1369) was a Moroccan-Berber explorer. The airport
it has a runway 3,500 meters long. Our means of transport awaits us

and, before getting off, I thank the Royal Air Maroc steward: “Schùkran”.
He, very kind and smiling, not expecting words in Arabic, replies: “Afwan”.

Tangier Airport: internally, it has a cactus plant; it is one of the main ones
Moroccan airports, and is open to commercial traffic.

We arrive in Malabata in the evening (2 hours ahead of Italian time). Hospitality
and dinner-refreshments. Village Club Méditerranée: a beautiful residence.

Bungalows-studios with bathroom and shower, gardens, various flowers and lawns.
Two zones/nudism, large swimming pool, tennis court and riding school: all sought after.

Very wide beach which is accessed via a path. Restaurant.
On the road, we meet Chica, the donkey in an enclosure: animal lover

of the fruits that I always bring to her. Shows, during lunch and dinner and throughout the day.
Ancient Rome: the Gladiators, the village chief is Nero and we are all around him.

One afternoon, a snake is placed on a woman in the theater stalls.
The poison was extracted earlier, so the danger is not fatal.

Time passes between the pool, pastime games, being in the sun, gardens and flowers.
There is an internal currency made up of necklaces with “grains” of various colors.

It is used for payments and purchases: it is a gift from a French gentleman
which my husband, always eager to ‘do’, used a favour.

Tangier: is on the Strait of Gibraltar, close to the Spanish coast. The position
determined its development and history. Its port has always favored union

between European and African cultures. Tangier: the most multi-ethnic of Morocco, and the colours
and the scents of Africa can be found in every corner: even outside.

The woods are extraordinary, the stunning views, the caves overlooking the rippling waves.
Tangier: “the white city”, because the white facades of the houses are dazzled

from the sun. Just outside it, the beautiful white sand beaches are bathed
from the turquoise sea. Two young men accompany us on the sunny roads:

the driver lived in Italy, knows Italian: he worked at the “Togni” circus.
With the two young men, we visit the Caves of Hercules: true dreams.

Cape Spartel is a vast meeting point between the Atlantic Ocean
and the Mediterranean Sea: not to be missed, a truly panoramic point.

After two days, we ask the boys for a tour of Tangiers with a visit to the Medina.
In a local clothes shop, we are offered tea: the welcome is nice.

The owner is friends with the guys who have a percentage of their own
and I decide to purchase a gold brocade caftan.

The two boys always wait for requests from potential customers while sitting
in front of the guardhouse. They perceive who is really interested: they are not naive.

Among our “colleague vacationers”, there is also an employee of a travel agency:
in each “absence for vacation”, he makes a shift which, this time, is long-range.

At this point, I would like to point out that, among the illustrious Moroccan characters, there is a gentleman,
an important man: he is Tahar Ben Jelloun, essayist, philosopher, writer.

Included in my first year of University, for the French language, we read
also this writer through “La Nuit sacrée”, his great work that we appreciate.

Tahar Ben Jelloun was born in Fez on 1 December 1944: he is a writer, poet and essayist
Moroccan, known for his writings on immigration. Non-racist person.

At that time, the city belongs to French Morocco, his family is old and well-to-do.
He has a bond with Tangier because his adolescence is spent there.

Philosophy studies are completed at the University of Rabat. There, start writing
his first poems in French: “Hommes sous linceul de silence”. – To read.

In Morocco, for several years, he held the role of Professor of Philosophy,
but the Arabization of teaching (he is not qualified for Pedagogy

in Arabic), forces him to emigrate to Paris, where he will obtain a doctorate
in Social Psychiatry on the mental confusion of the hospitalized immigrant:

he writes “The extreme solitude”. He will transfer his maturity as a psychotherapist in the novel
“La Reclusion solitaire”. He will write exclusively in French, collaborating

with “Le Monde”. He wins many prizes because he is capable of creating wonders.
He has four children and lived a lot in Paris.

Morocco: originally, land of the Berber tribe of the Mauri, above the Saharan zone
which, later, will become the land of the two Kings Juba of Mauretania, a Roman province.

A fragrant land full of fascinating features.
Land that seduces through its enchanting fragrances.

GRECIA E CORFU’ “POST COLONNELLI”
(Agosto 1981)

rollando.

All’autista del pullman, chiedo, in lingua francese, se ci porta all’albergo dove alloggiamo.

che “NON SIAMO PIU’ ALL’EPOCA DEI COLONNELLI”. Ringraziamo, sorridendo.

le bancarelle: sono degli ambulanti e vendono carne e alimentari del luogo;

Piscina interna all’albergo-blocco centrale, piscina esterna e riproduzioni

dopotutto, stiamo trascorrendo solamente dieci giorni.

GREECE AND CORFU “POST COLONELS”
(August 1981)

Trip and stay organized by Valtur, a partner Tour Operator
with my employer/C.R.A. – Which “Deus ex machina”, I booked.

The Milan-Athens flight is quite uneventful until we are
over Greece: the wind from the area beats against the plane and it seems that we are

rolling. The temperature is 37 great. On the plane, we meet an Italian gentleman
who sympathizes and invites us, for the same evening, as representatives of the local guest

in the Church where he will marry. Landed in Athens, the temperature is heated.
Leaving the airport, which will take us to the hotel, we board the air-conditioned coach.

Hotel “Alexandra Divani Zafolia”: the room is on the inside, in front of a hostel.
After dinner, tourists are taken to the Dora Stratos show with ballet and Sirtaki. Handsome!

At the end, we don’t find our escort, Sofia: we don’t see her
I ask the bus driver, in French, if he will take us to the hotel where we are staying.

Next morning: they take us to a central square, after which my husband and I opt
to take a taxi to take us on a tour of the city of Athens. We pass

in front of the former royal palace and we go to the bank for the currency exchange.
The cashier serves us very kindly, hums “Arrivederci, Roma” and greets us.

We go down to the restaurant with a slight delay because, back at the hotel, we wash:
a member of the group gets angry: I kindly reply that we will tidy up.

Ivo and his wife are our table mates, so Ivo defends us, saying
that “WE ARE NO LONGER AT THE TIME OF THE COLONELS”. We thank, smiling.

In the afternoon, Sofia takes tourists to the Erechtheion and the Parthenon:
in front of these buildings, there is a large Greek theater, the “Teseion”.

Sofia accompanies the Tomb of Socrates, on a hillock, whose road is an extension
of the central street of Athens which divides the city into two parts. An interesting construction

it’s the Central Museum of Athens: you can’t take a photograph, but you can take a few shots:
beautiful statues and true works of art that my husband captures: that’s it.

“Alexander Divani Zafolia” is not very far from Colle del Lycabetto.
We drink a whiskey by the swimming pool located on the top floor: there is a nice little bar.

The next morning, they take us to visit Piraeus, where we have lunch
near the port. Afternoon: to Cape Sounion. On the way, let’s see

the stalls: they are street vendors and sell local meat and food;
here, spoiled for choice, people give free rein.

The return is in the late afternoon and we see the brightly lit streets.
At dinner, we express the argument effortlessly, with the right words.

Morning of the following day: there is “freedom”; without anxiety to run, we pass it.
My husband and I take the opportunity to remember many travel details: we talk about them.

Afternoon, for the Athens/Corfu flight, to the “Athens International”: we get carried away.
In Kerkyra, the airport is very small: when it leaves, the plane even has to wait

the “green light” of the traffic light. The plane moves slowly and the outer wing invades the space
of the road. The pilots who perform these maneuvers are very good, but I thank God.

In Kerkyra, in the evening, waving of the hands and corrected vocals: good reception.
From the next day, we know the village: greenery and flowers. Beautiful residence.

Our room: on the hill side, it is 4 by 7 meters, a bathroom with double sinks.
Liveliness and every good thing in the morning breakfast.

Indoor swimming pool at the central block hotel, outdoor swimming pool and reproductions
of the various statues, and bas-reliefs, including that of the famous Iglisso’. Creations

really artistic, the originals. We descend through a path that leads us
to the beach: straw umbrellas, kayaks, lifeguards: expert, shrewd people.

Hobbies: there are many daytime pastimes, including the preference vote for a song.
Evenings: a piece of music was taken up by Pippo Franco, in one of his performances.

We do not participate in the trip to the city of Achilleion and its surroundings:
after all, we are only spending ten days.

The day of departure has arrived: “girls and boys” get on the bus; we hug.
A beautiful period that we remember with great pleasure and a nostalgic touch.

VICENZA e DINTORNI
(weekend estate 1981)

VICENZA and SURROUNDINGS
(summer weekend 1981)

Vicenza: with the Vicenza side of Monte Grappa, it has prehistoric origins.
From the Roman Empire, it goes into custody in Padua, Giangaleazzo Visconti, the Republic

Serenissima of Venice, to Napoleon, to the Austrian Empire and to the Kingdom of Italy.
Its hills are the Monti Berici. Cultural Tourism is a source of pride for Italy,

it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks mainly to Andrea Palladio.
We arrive at the hotel indicated by my colleague, originally from Vicenza; quickly,

we find it. A little higher up, on the hill, is the restaurant where you can have lunch.
The day is beautiful and warm and we take advantage of it to be able to visit

the Piazza dei Signori with the Palazzo del Capitanio in front of the rebuilt Basilica
by Palladio: it is the most famous public building and is much admired.

Teatro “Olimpico”: great architectural work by Palladio with splendid acoustics.
The following day, Sunday, we and my colleague and his family pass through Marostica

where is the famous Piazza degli Scacchi, well known for the game with living characters,
which takes place in the second weekend of September; it has beautiful historic buildings adjacent to it.

Again, in Vicenza, we enter in the Valmorana Salvi Gardens, i.e. the Public Garden,
where statues and two Palladian-style loggias are housed: all in the historic centre.

The vegetation is lush and varied. The feed is thrown from the Canaletto bridge,
to the ducklings who live there: they are the “masters” in the calm waters of the little stream.

Once the “lunch” is over, they move away turning their little head backwards and emitting
their verse as a thank you: yes, just a thank you.

We reach Bassano del Grappa, the town famous for the creation of Grappa.
We stop at the famous Ponte Vecchio (or Ponte degli Alpini), on the Grappa river.

Covered bridge, it is a very characteristic bridge: Palladio designed it.
My colleague, remembering the song “Sul ponte di Bassano”, gave us his hand.

A humanly and culturally interesting weekend to remember.
The following week, find yourself at work, my colleague and I like to reminisce.

E’ terra ispiratrice apprezzata

dagli impressionisti, borghi caratteristici affascinanti e centri storici.

riso e pesce, piselli e carote.

FRENCH RIVIERA
(1981)

We spend the Easter holidays on the sunny Côte d’Azur.
Among its most beautiful beaches, Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez. It is an inspiring land appreciated

from the Impressionists, charming characteristic villages and historic centres.
Nice, with the famous Promenade des Anglais and the “Belle Époque” style of the buildings.

Guided tour with two IVET Tour Leaders. They know how to sympathize.
with us tourists; capable and experienced, these escorts assist us in an exemplary way.

We arrive in the Principality of Monaco, a small city-state, where we finally stop:
here, the Royal Palace and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception we admire.

Cathedral where Grace Kelly and Rainier were married. Amazed, the port
we see, in addition to the sublime landscape below with villas, the sea, the port.

One of the oldest states in the world: it has been independent for two hundred years, it seems.
We continue to Nice, where our hotel awaits us, not far from the sea.

Our room is on the fourth floor: you sleep well, no noise.
An agreement with our accommodation facility, the restaurant is facing the sea.

Menu: the organization, the Easter seriousness makes it scrupulously observed:
rice and fish, peas and carrots. Diet menu that reduces weight.

Holy Saturday: tour of the perfume factories of Grasse, in the Alpes-Maritimes.
I buy bottles “en verre” with lily of the valley and jasmine: very delicate fragrances.

Afternoon: excursion to the sea of Saint-Tropez, the Roman warrior who gave
the name of the place. A good rather vegetable dinner: we have often remembered this.

On the way, we pass sumptuous hotels, the “Negresco” being one of them.
Then, we see boulders and rocks beaten by strong waves that you would not expect.

Afternoon: walk on the “Promenade des Anglais”, wide beach and sea.
It’s sunny. The climate is good. The waves are bubbly and clear.

Easter morning: walking around Nice, especially the Central Avenue.
Nice is full of beauties and, even here, it proves to be so.

In old Nice, a small village, at the end of the Cours Saleya, the painter
Matisse left home. Here, in tranquillity, he spent hours and hours

with his art. Close to the sea are the luxuriant gardens with the fountain.
The center sees boutiques, clubs, entertainment, museums and culture in Place Massena.

On the road, President Pertini and his body guardes: talk to an Italian transferee.
Exciting to see our President from half a meter whose hand I would kiss.

In the evening, we all meet in the partner restaurant and have the last supper
because tomorrow morning, we will go back to Italy: let’s feel sorry for it.

A Pisa, presenziano

(11 aprile 1981)

Morning. My husband offers me a ride as soon as we wake up.
I reflect a bit and then, enthusiastic and happy, I exclaim:

“Torre del Lago! Torre del Lago Puccini!”. We get ready
and, with great joy, we take the highway,

leaving it to walk the Via Aurelia towards the Puccini area.
We pass various cities, including Mascagni’s Livorno,

arriving in Torre del Lago, where the Guide accompanies the visit
of the Master’s Villa-Museum. I’m in love with music

by Puccini and show the Guide the earned token
in Bongiorno’s “Rischiatutto”, a famous television programme.

I had only seen the house through the film shot on the Master,
with Gabriele Ferzetti, who plays this person with great artistic flair

and who, towards his heroines, nurtures a lot of gentle sensitivity.
Finally, I see live his piano and his “civil” grave

in the mausoleum of the villa built by the composer’s son.
A tribute was paid by erecting the monument on the Belvedere di Torre.

Puccini had named his boat after his beloved Butterfly.
Boat that traveled the sea of Viareggio, where it was also moored.

Viareggio: after Torre del Lago, on the beach, we see a small restaurant
unpretentious, but in which we lick our mustaches for the good “snack”.

After that, Pisa. Here, the great Galileo Galilei was born.
1583: in the Pisan Cathedral, he observes a swinging lamp and, as a scientist,

formulates the Theory of Isochronism of the Pendulum”. In Pisa, I attend
two locations: “Normale di Pisa” University and the Italian Research Council.

It’s evening. We are tired and satisfied. We would like to have dinner and rest
but, in Pontremoli there is “all busy”: we opt to return

in our house (after all, it’s a very good solution
which leads us to rest well in our Latvian).

dove comunicherò in lingua francese e relativo gergo.

Récéption: dispone di servizio di cambio Lira/Dinaro tunisino

IN THE TUNISIA OF BOURGHIBA
(December 26, 1980-January 2, 1981)

We arrive by shuttle from the Porta Garibaldi Terminal
at Milan-Malpensa Airport, from which we take off

the evening trip to Tunis. The weather is cold and clear
but, by plane, the temperature is good and we fully enjoy it.

Over Liguria, the TunisAir pilot turns off the lights and we see
the cities below illuminated: we feel wonder and enthusiasm.

Tunis airport: landing operations and checks as per rule.
We meet our lawyer: we will meet again at the table.

Taoufik is the driver of the car that takes us to our hotel,
where I will communicate in the French language and related jargon.

Reception: it has a Lira/Tunisian Dinar exchange service
and international telephone service. A kind little man works there.

Accommodation structure: el block with mini bungalows.
Our room with bathroom which has a hotblue sanitary ware.

Two cots nearby; in their sack, the duvets.
Heating: it buzzes a bit and the degrees are low.

For foreign tourists, the hotel has a pig farm:
we are Catholics and can observe our usual rules.

Stables: my husband takes my picture on the back of a trained horse.
Swimming pool: a German guest gets wet with the low temperature but is not cold.

By taxi, we visit Tunis, see the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the central avenues …
Apart from the characteristic boat-shaped house, the others are normal buildings.

The taxi driver suggests the beautiful and very interesting Bardo National Museum,
in the homonymous western suburb of Tunis, it is unique: an authentic bulwark.

Six years earlier, this building becomes one of the major historical monuments,
and the most important collection is formed by its symbols: the Romans mosaics,

all of exceptional workmanship, beauty and conservation.
Several statues of gods, heroes and mythological characters: are an exception.

Punic finds, Arab-Islamic rooms: they have historical importance,
in the most important Tunisian museum, the oldest Arab and African museum.

Works from the Christian period of Tunisia are collected
in this museum, in a room that has many.

The visit to Carthage, to us tourists, shows a beautiful mosaic art,
but we all take shelter under the porch because the sudden rain is falling.

There, desert roses are sold: sedimentary formations
desert countries, my husband gives me one. Various measures,

the maximum width is sixteen centimetres: they have shaded colours
in shades of orange-yellow-ochre; they are beautiful aggregate crystals.

In the Souk (their market), we are attracted by trinkets,
including carpets and circular brasses: pretty saucers.

“Belly dance”, never seen. In the lounge of the hotel,
two young women perform: we are all intrigued that evening.

And, once again, it has arrived: December 31, 1980, the End of the Year Party.
Dinner and joy: a lot of joy, especially for New Year’s greetings.

January 2, 1981, evening: we leave our room number two hundred and twenty.
With sadness, we say goodbye to the Manager, the grounds and the attendants.

Returning to Italy, we travel remembering the period; our soul is happy.
At our house, the memory of a beautiful period feeds our soul.
